Who is God? How would someone describe Him? Can God even be described? The late S.M Lockridge once gave a sermon describing who God is and then concluded that God is simply indescribable. In Psalm 71:19, we read "... O God, who is like you?" And yet we also know from further study of the Psalms that one way we draw closer to God is to reflect and acknowledge who He reveals Himself to be and what He has done and is doing. In the coming months, Lily7 hopes to give you a small glimpse into who God is by focusing on a few of His attributes. By no way an exhaustive description of who God is, understanding these attributes has a profound effect on our life and how we view the world. They also serve to remind us of why we worship God, to reflect on who God is and how, like Reverand Lockridge concluded, He truly is indescribable.

Many times in my life I have been disappointed when events did not unfold the way that I had hoped or planned. Yet I have always found great comfort in knowing that my life is in the hands of God, no matter what. Even when circumstances seem unfair or I feel like the victim of someone else's evil intentions, my life is never beyond God's power and control. He reminds me, "I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) Even though things may not go my way, as long as I trust and obey God, they will go His way. "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." (Proverbs 19:21)
What each of us has to decide is: "Do I trust Him?" When you don't get accepted into the school of your choice, or you suddenly lose your job, when your parents get divorced, or tragedy strikes, how will you respond? Do you get angry at God, or trust that He is still in control and has a plan for our good?
Kent Whitaker, in his book Murder by Family, speaks of finding God's grace and goodness even when his own son plotted to murder him, his wife and his other son. He succeeded in killing Kent's wife and other son and now sits on death row. Against all human logic and every painful emotion, Kent has chosen to believe that "God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them." (Romans 8:28) And as a result, Kent has seen God's incredible plan for his life unfold even in the midst of horrific tragedy. Kent's story of grace and forgiveness has been featured on Oprah, 48 Hours Mystery and ABC News Prime Time. Kent's story is God's story of grace and forgiveness.
Remember, He is always in control, and nothing is outside of His divine, sovereign hands. Do you trust Him?
But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hands... (Psalm 31:14-15)
