Who is God? How would someone describe Him? Can God even be described? The late S.M Lockridge once gave a sermon describing who God is and then concluded that God is simply indescribable. In Psalm 71:19, we read "... O God, who is like you?" And yet we also know from further study of the Psalms that one way we draw closer to God is to reflect and acknowledge who He reveals Himself to be and what He has done and is doing. In the coming months, Lily7 hopes to give you a small glimpse into who God is by focusing on a few of His attributes. By no way an exhaustive description of who God is, understanding these attributes has a profound effect on our life and how we view the world. They also serve to remind us of why we worship God, to reflect on who God is and how, like Reverand Lockridge concluded, He truly is indescribable.

I was in college the first time my heart was broken. Ok, in hindsight, it wasn't actually BROKEN, but it was definitely dented. The story is a familiar one, so I won't get into unnecessary details. As you might suspect, there was this boy and he was there with me and then there ended up being this other girl and he was sort of there with her too. Yeah, you get the point...agony.
This scenario has repeated itself a few times in my life...which makes me not at all unique. As a result, "fidelity" has eeked its way up my list of "Must Haves." It leap-frogged "good dresser" and "nice teeth" and skipped past "sense of humor" before landing squarely between "strong character" and "loves his momma." For years I spent mental and emotional energy looking for a faithful man. I found guys who were good listeners. I met poets and scholars. I received love letters and great gifts...but fidelity eluded me.
A couple of years ago, frustrated and disappointed, I cried out to God. I was angry (I may even have been yelling). I admitted that I was lonely. I told Him that I had trouble trusting...I even had trouble trusting Him. I wanted someone constant...someone reliable... I wanted to be SURE of someone. Here's what He said:
In Exodus 34:6 He told me He's slow to anger and rich in unfailing love and FAITHFULNESS.
In Deuteronomy 7:9 He told me He is the FAITHFUL God who keeps His promises.
In Psalms 36:5 His FAITHFULNESS reaches beyond the clouds.
In Psalms 40:10 His FAITHFULNESS saves me.
In Psalms 61:7 His FAITHFULNESS protects me.
In Psalms 138:2 His FAITHFULNESS is backed by all the honor of His name.
In Lamentations 3:23 His FAITHFULNESS is great and His mercies are new everyday.
In Micah 7:20 His FAITHFULNESS is a covenant oath that He made for me.
In I Corinthians 10:13 His FAITHFULNESS is my protection and deliverance.
In Galatians 5:22 His FAITHFULNESS is contagious.
In 2 Timothy 2:13 He IS FAITHFULNESS. When my fidelity to him falters He remains FAITHFUL, because it is His very character.
So, needless to say, God TOTALLY won the argument. I wanted to doubt and to feel restless and anxious. His FAITHFULNESS wouldn't allow it, though. He LONGS for me to be sure in Him. Men (and women) will fail us, but God is perfectly loyal and committed and dependable and trustworthy and reliable and lovely. He is For Us. He is Faithful.
