What is RSS?
A non-technical interpretation is: "I'm ready for some stories." Suppose you have a dozen sites and blogs you visit regularly ... it can take hours to keep up with all the new stories. Enter RSS — with RSS you can subscribe to the dozen sites and the new content gets delivered to you automatically, without the need to visit all of the sites separately.

What is RSS?

For the technophile, the acronym stands for "Really Simple Syndication." RSS is a type of XML file that was developed to syndicate content so that it could be shared on the web. Content can be text, audio, or video to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen with a feed reader.

How do I subscribe to RSS feeds?
Browsers like Internet Explorer (version 7 and higher), Firefox, and Safari allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds through the browser — it's called "live bookmarking."

Feed readers can also be used to subscribe to RSS feeds. They allow for a lot more control in managing RSS feeds than their "live bookmarking" counterparts. Feed readers are applications that are either web-based and run inside your browser (i.e. Google Reader and Bloglines) or they are installed and run on your computer like Microsoft Word (FeedDemon [PC] NetNewsWire Lite [Mac]).
